Australian rapper Iggy Azalea scoops six American Music Award nominations.
THIS time last year, not many people knew who Australian rapper Iggy Azalea was. But all of that has changed.
Azalea scored a stunning six nods across a number of major categories, including New Artist of the Year, Single of the Year for her breakout hit “Fancy” and Favourite Female Artist.
The blonde lyricist will also go head-to-head with superstar Beyonce for the top Artist of the Year gong — the AMA’s highest honour.
She’s also up for the Favourite Rap/Hip Hop Album award as well as Favourite Rap/Hip Hop Artist.
She took to Twitter to share her reaction to the news, describing it as “not a bad way to start the week off”.
While she is likely to do well in most categories, Azalea faces tough competition in the tough category with the likes of Katy Perry, Lorde, One Direction and Pharrell Williams.
The strong AMA showing comes just days after Azalea’s vocal run-in with a photographer in a California supermarket at the weekend.
She defended her conduct, which included trying to ram the paparazzo with a shopping trolley.
Video footage shows Azalea and an assistant asking the unidentified snapper to leave them alone, and snapping when he doesn’t.
When the man accuses Azalea of spitting at him, she responded: “I hope you have Ebola … I hope you die, you’re a f—ing c—”.
According to her Twitter, the feisty performer spent the night in after her AMA nominations watching the return season of the television show Walking Dead.
The 2014 American Music Awards will be held in Los Angeles on November 23.
